Hole has long been fascinated by the night sky and the quiet vastness of space. Growing up surrounded by natural darkness, the cosmos became a powerful source of wonder—one that would later find its way into his music. Though his first telescope came later in life, stargazing quickly became a deep, personal practice—both a scientific curiosity and an aesthetic experience.

Several of Hole’s compositions reflect this connection to the stars, including Reflections in Light, Prism, and Cygnus X1. His newest piece, Requiem for a Star – Cosmic Soundscapes of Destruction and Creation, is inspired by the life cycles of stars and was written for the Cikada String Quartet with double bass. The work draws on images from the Hubble Space Telescope and explores the textures and transformations of cosmic events, translating celestial forms into sound.

With influences ranging from George Crumb to Olaf Stapledon’s speculative fiction, Requiem for a Star combines composed and improvised elements, conventional and extended techniques, and even graphic notation. The result is a requiem without words—an intimate reflection on light, time, and the silent dramas unfolding in the universe above us.
