About the Event
Vijay Iyer
Mutations I-X
Time, Place, Action
At the intersection of jazz, classical music, and contemporary composition, Vijay Iyer’s Mutations I–X is a bold and intricate work that bridges improvisation with structured form. Rooted in Iyer’s fascination with mathematical patterns and his deep understanding of both chamber and jazz traditions, the piece moves fluidly between written and spontaneous elements. Originally released on ECM in 2014, Mutations has been lauded as a landmark recording, showcasing Iyer’s innovative approach to musical language.
For this special performance at Moldejazz 2017, the Cikada String Quartet takes on the demanding and dynamic string role, bringing their signature precision and expressivity to Iyer’s intricate textures. In addition to Mutations I–X, the concert features Time, Place, Action, a work Iyer originally composed for the Brentano String Quartet, expanding his exploration of rhythmic interplay and harmonic tension.
This evening at Teatret Vårt marks the closing event of Vijay Iyer’s residency at Moldejazz—a fitting finale where composed and improvised elements intertwine, creating an immersive and unpredictable musical experience.
